A comparison of two studies of physical media distribution reveals that manufacturing, not shipment to retail outlets, emits most of the carbon.

Note that these two studies use different methodologies, so this represents our best interpretation of the data. We've also performed an analysis of the carbon footprint of the media production and manufacture/distirbution phases of the NewsCorp project.
