Universities' Climate Commitments
The American College & University Presidents’ Climate Commitment is "a high-visibility effort to address global warming by garnering institutional commitments to neutralize greenhouse gas emissions, and to accelerate the research and educational efforts of higher education to equip society to re-stabilize the earth’s climate." Over 650 American and international institutions have signed the commitment. Is yours on the list?
The Climate Commitment does not specifically address GreenICT, but given that tech gear drives a significant portion of a research university's energy consumption and carbon emissions, Green ICT can play a key role in meeting the commitment. What I do like about the Commitment wording is its emphasis on immediate action:
1. A target date for achieving climate neutrality as soon as possible.
2. Interim targets for goals and actions that will lead to climate neutrality.
The second is particularly important, since long-term targets without incremental goals and accountability rarely yield meaningful results. I would have like to seen the text include a commitment to establish internal accountability because this is where well-intentioned efforts often fail to meet objectives.
I invite readers to post comments below with links to similar initiatives in other countries and regions.
